Two-story great rooms sell Texas houses, and then the first July afternoon arrives and the upper glass turns the room into a greenhouse. Covering tall windows is a different problem from covering wide ones: everything is about reach, scale and how the treatment looks from both floors.
What actually works at height
- Motorized roller and solar shades, which disappear into a clean roll and move on a remote or schedule
- Cellular shades in tall runs, for insulation where afternoon sun loads the room
- Plantation shutters on the lower tier with shades above, a layered look that keeps reachable windows adjustable
Why motorization stops being a luxury
A shade twenty feet up is not something anyone operates by hand, and a wand long enough to reach it is not something anyone wants to store. Motorization is the difference between upper shades that actually move with the sun and upper shades frozen in one position for years. A schedule that drops the west bank at 3pm does more for the cooling bill than any fabric choice.
Scale, symmetry and the view from below
Tall windows are architecture, and the treatment has to respect the lines. Matching fabrics across upper and lower tiers keeps the wall reading as one composition, and inside mounts preserve the trim that makes those windows worth showing off.
